Long before Johann Sebastian Staedtler founded his own pencil manufacturing plant J.S. Staedtler in 1835, one of his ancestors, Friedrich Staedtler, had already been active as a ‘lead-pencil maker’.
Records of him in the city annals date back as far as 1662.
It was Johann Sebastian Staedtler who transformed the workshop into an industrial plant.

On 3rd October 1835, he received permission from Nuremberg’s municipal council to produce blacklead, red chalk and pastel pencils, thereby laying the foundation for the modern, world-famous STAEDTLER Group as we know it today.
